The claim that environmental and resource economics should
be studied within an inter disciplinary context is taken very seriously.
Such a context requires students to have, in addition to microeconomics, a good
understanding of the basic principles of the natural and physical sciences that
govern the natural world. This book addresses this concern by devoting a chapter
to ecology. This is done not only to make certain relevant ecological
principles and rules understandable to non science students or persons, but also to clearly present
the disciplinary bridge between economics and ecology.
The book consists of eighteen chapters which are grouped
into eight parts, as shown in the diagram. The five boxes represent the major
organizational themes of the book. As indicated by the direction of the arrows,
these five themes or major groupings are related in both specific and general
terms. The exact nature of these relationships will become evident from the
discussions that follow.
